Mid-August week in Syracuse

The feast of Santa Maria Assunta is held on August 15 and is the most important religious festival of the summer in Syracuse.
Among the many artistic and cultural events, the “Festa del Mare” is certainly the funniest event: maritime competitions are also added to the sacred rites, such as the famous regatta in the historic districts, and many shows in the center of Ortigia.
In the days around Ferragosto it is also possible to visit the many exhibitions set up for the occasion in the old city.

The feast of San Sebastiano in Palazzolo Acreid

The other festival not to be missed during the mid-August period is certainly the one dedicated to San Sebastiano Martire in Palazzolo Acreide, about 40 kilometers from Syracuse.
This festival dating back to 1414 is celebrated every year on January 20 and is repeated on August 10 with the same devotion and a show of great folklore.
Just think that the celebrations of San Sebastian last ten days!
It begins on 10 August around 10:30 with the traditional blessing of votive cuddure (donuts of bread offered to the saint) and laurel.
At 1 pm there is the evocative “sciuta” (the exit) of the Saint and the relic carried bare-shoulder between the firing of firecrackers and the throwing of thousands of “nsareddi” (multicolored strips of paper).
The sound of the bands accompanies the procession and the two fercoli are followed by barefoot women and thousands of devotees, while babies and children are stripped and offered to the saint.
We then continue at 2 pm with the exciting “Catena Umana” along the climb of via Fiumegrande.
The day finally ends with the evening procession and at midnight with the pyromusical show.
On 17 August the 10 days of celebration end with the procession of the reliquary and the simulacrum of St. Sebastian on the “varicedda”.
The grand finale is the fireworks display and the veil of the saint.
